(dis)connect

September 1 - September 30, 2023 | Co-Curated by Adrienne Outlaw and Sarah Moon

(dis) Connect is meant to encourage in-real-life connection through conversations about the art on display. That the exhibition takes place in what many consider a sacred space demonstrates the open-mindedness of a congregation that welcomes transformational ideas and dialogue. The artworks evoke empathy and awareness of current issues with which society grapples.

Using paint and photography, Megan Kenyon addresses the profound conflicts in Christianity even as she seeks to encourage empathy. Mad Green’s art focusing on the self-spans a variety of mediums that imbue tenderness, love, and acceptance in an often violent and uncompromising world. Elena Piston’s poems reveal the hidden self and remind us of our humanity, our connection to nature, and our need for others. Sharlene Lee’s mesmerizing video portrays the conspicuous colors animals use to deter predators, thus highlighting the disconnection between perception and reality. Jasmine Raskas' colorful, glossy, and textural works challenge our perceptions of sentience. Shaelee Comettant’s sock installation speaks to our long for warmth and comfort while reminding us of the strength found in collective memory. Sarah Moon’s use of colorful craft materials resists the gendered hierarchies of practice in the art world. Her work begs us to celebrate joy, see behind the mask, and dance like nobody's watching. Jordan Geiger’s textile pieces in the Slate Space provide a meditative place in which to center oneself. Calm, powerful, and vulnerable, these works highlight the labor of love. My work in the show pays homage to one of the First Congregational Church’s most beloved families. Several years ago Bill Mellish gave me his mother’s art supplies and the drafting table and asked that in return, I share them with others. I liken such connections to The Red Gate, which would not have been possible without the infectious enthusiasm, fresh eyes, and hard work of Sarah Moon, the steadfast encouragement from FCC Pastor Mia White, the dedication of Emily Stokes, the love I have for my daughter and the hope I hold for this congregation and community. I hope we (dis) Connect at The Red Gate.
